Be Polite

Greetings! This is the first lesson and I am teaching you about good manners. As you grow up, you will find that English is a useful communication tool. Therefore from now on, you have to learn to be polite when you are meeting people. Let us start with some simple dialogues.

Waiter      : Hello. How are you today?           Belinda : Excuse me.
Customer : Fine, thank you. May I have        Sarah   : Yes?
a menu, please?                             Belinda : Can you tell me the
Waiter      : Of course, here you go.                                time, please?
Customer : Thank you. I'd like a grilled          Sarah    : Of course. It's twelve
                   salmon, please.                                              o'clock.
Waiter      : Sure. Can I get you anything       Belinda  : Thank you so much.
                   else?                                                 Sarah    : You’re welcome.
Customer : No thanks.

Did you see how they ask and answer politely? That’s right. You have to say please, thank you, may I, excuse me and you’re welcome according to the situation. The notes below might be useful for you to choose which word to use when you are talking with people. Read out loud!

Say “thank you” when someone gives you a present.
Say “thank you” when someone praises you.
Say “thank you” when someone does something for you.
Say “please” when you are asking someone to give you something.
Say “please” when you are asking someone to do something for you.
Say “may I” when you are asking for something from someone who has it.
Say “excuse me” when you make an embarrassing noise such as a burp.
Say “excuse me, please” when you must interrupt someone.
Say “excuse me, please” when you must ask them to move.
Say “you’re welcome” when someone thanks you.
Say “I’m sorry” when you make a mistake or hurt someone.
Say “I’m sorry” when you hurt someone.

Do you know what to say now when you are interacting with other people? Keep in mind that using these polite words is a way to be kind to other people. How do you feel when people say please, thank you, and may I to you? Good isn't it? So from now on, always use polite words when we talk to people! That's all for the first lesson. We shall continue this next time.
